The weeklong crackdown on crime in the Inland Empire, known as Operation Consequences, wrapped up with a string of arrests and confiscations, according to a statement released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Between August 11 and August 17, in collaboration with various local and federal law enforcement agencies, authorities targeted several locations known for gang and narcotics activities across the county, as reported by the SBSD Headquarters.
During an intensive day of operations last Friday in Ontario and nearby areas, the team made contact with gang affiliates and individuals barred from carrying firearms. The result was 49 felony and 66 misdemeanor arrests, as per the SBSD Headquarters. They also confiscated over 4 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, alongside quantities of cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. As part of the seizures, four firearms were recovered. Aiming to make the streets safer, they were patrolled proactively by the San Bernardino Movement Against Street Hoodlums (SMASH) Street Enforcement Team (SET).
The efforts of Law enforcement were buoyed by Proposition 36, enacted following the voter mandate from November 5, 2024, titled “The Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act.” This legal framework reformed the softer touch of Proposition 47 and introduced tougher penalties and regulations, some of which applied to two arrests made during the latest crackdown. The operation also followed up on previous investigations targeting the Ontario Varrio Sur gang, resulting in substantial seizures and arrests the prior year, according to the Sheriff's official report.
The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors stepped in, authorizing additional funding for the crime suppression initiative, indicating a commitment to addressing quality-of-life issues and public safety in the region. The funds are intended to enhance law enforcement services within the county, supporting the Sheriff Department's ongoing operations. Operation Consequences will continue over the coming months, focusing on violent crime, gang disruption, and illegal arms possession and trafficking within the High Desert and the surroundings of San Bernardino.
