As Socorro Independent School District's (SISD) 51 campuses opened their doors for the 2025-2026 school year on August 4, the air buzzed with the optimism and energy of students and educators poised for a fresh start. Interim Superintendent James Vasquez, the favorite to become the permanent superintendent, was on hand to greet the students, setting the tone for a year he hoped would be marked by significant accomplishments. "I’m looking forward to a great year filled with positive energy and great vibes," Vasquez said, according to Socorro ISD. He expressed confidence in the district's ability to further academic success and revel in sports victories.
Building on exemplary preliminary 2025 State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) results, SISD is aiming high. The district showed improved performance, with more A-rated schools and a significant drop in C-rated campuses, expecting no schools to fall in the D or F categories. Pointing to this achievement, students like Aneth Aranda, a third-grader at Dr. Sue Shook Elementary School, are looking to hit high academic marks, make new friends, and delve into figures like Martin Luther King Jr. "It’s just so cool," Aranda told Socorro ISD when speaking about learning old history.
At Purple Heart Elementary School, the first day for Pre-K students such as Leslie Gutierrez marked a beginning amidst the assortment of emotions, as parents, like Sergio, watched on with both pride and a touch of sorrow. Reflecting on his child’s eagerness, Sergio Gutierrez said, "She loves it and wants to make friends," as noted by Socorro ISD. SISD affirms its commitment to offering free Pre-K for three and four-year-olds, among other educational opportunities, to pave a prosperous future for each student.
