Commuters in Pittsburgh faced significant delays this morning after an overturned dump truck led to the closure of Route 51 outbound near the West End Bridge. According to WPXI, the incident, initially reported to emergency dispatchers at approximately 8:24 a.m., prompted police to block off the impacted roadway, with PennDOT cameras capturing the scene.
According to the live footage and reports, the overturned vehicle appeared to be located just before the bridge leading up to the North Shore exit; as a result, traffic was heavily affected with lanes closed, drivers were scrambling to seek alternate routes to circumvent the bottleneck that the crash engendered, meanwhile, Pittsburgh Public Safety officials reported that the driver of the dump truck had self-extricated and, remarkably, avoided injury in the mishap.
The extent of the congestion prompted extended road closures, with no immediate timeline for reopening as crews worked on the scene. WTAE reported that as late as 9:30 p.m., all lanes remained closed.
