Christopher Byers, a paralegal, was arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into Maricopa County's 4th Avenue Jail. The case began when jail staff noticed discolored pages in paperwork submitted for an inmate. A field test showed the pages contained synthetic cannabinoids, also known as Spice, K2, or JWH Analytes, according to ABC15.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Drug Suppression Task Force arrested Byers and executed a warrant at his home, seizing multiple pieces of evidence. During a jail-wide search, a K-9 Unit detected drugs, and staff recovered pages similar to those Byers had brought in, which tested positive for synthetic cannabinoids. Charges for the inmates involved are still pending as the investigation continues. AZFamily reported that authorities confirmed the evidence seized from Byers’ home linked him to the case.
Sheriff Jerry Sheridan addressed the case, saying, "Keeping drugs out of our jail facility is one of my highest priorities," and "We remain fully committed to preventing the flow of contraband and holding accountable anyone who attempts to introduce it," as mentioned by ABC15. Paralegal Christopher Byers is under investigation and could face a class 2 felony charge under Arizona law, which makes bringing drugs into correctional facilities a serious offense. The case is ongoing, and details about Byers’ alleged involvement are still developing.
