Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) teamed up with local officials on July 31st to unveil the new Parke Groundwater Well and refurbished basketball courts at Villa Parke, as reported by the City of Pasadena's news release. In a ceremony that marked a substantial step forward for the community's water infrastructure and recreational facilities, Mayor Victor Gordo and Vice Mayor Jess Rivas were among the attendees at the ribbon-cutting event.
The new groundwater well comes as a timely replacement for the century-old Garfield Well with cutting-edge features, including a submersible pump situated close to 500 feet below ground and the ability to expedite the water's journey to the surface at a rate of 1,500 gallons per minute. This upgrade underscores the city's commitment to securing its water future. "Continuous investment in our infrastructure is crucial," PWP General Manager David Reyes shared with the attending public, "Projects like the Parke Groundwater Well help ensure a resilient water future for Pasadena." The basketball courts, which stand adjacent to the well, have been equally rejuvenated, offering a place for the local community, particularly its youth, to converge and partake in the joy of the sport.
While the pandemic might have slowed progress, it did not derail the Parke Groundwater Well project, the first phase of which PWP commenced during that trying period. It included the essentials: drilling, construction of the well itself, development, and rigorous testing to ensure the quality of the water. Work carried on seamlessly with enhancements to the mechanical and electrical infrastructure surrounding the well and was completed by April 2022 despite ongoing health and safety concerns.
A series of additional improvements took the project across the finish line with installation of new court lights and turf, as well as park irrigation system repairs. These refinements stand testament to PWP's partnership with the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department, a collaboration emphasizing not only the preservation of the environment but also the cultivation of community spaces in which families and friends can gather, recreate, and weave the fabric of their shared experiences. The ribbon-cutting ceremeny wasn't just a mere formality but a celebration, a public statement of work done and promises kept.
