A Pasco County man faces charges following a two-vehicle collision in Weeki Wachee, which resulted in the death of a dog. According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Jowers was arrested for reckless driving and driving under the influence in the early hours of Saturday, after his vehicle struck another car and a utility pole.

The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. when Deputy A. Davila responded to reports of a reckless driver on Commercial Way and Cortez Boulevard. Jowers, born February 22, 2000, was traveling at a high rate of speed, when he lost control and sideswiped another vehicle. Both vehicles sustained significant damages,, and Jowers’ car went on to hit a wooden utility pole, which it sheared in half.

While Jowers was ejected from his car and found in the brush by Deputy J. Twitty, using a drone, the other driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Tragically, the driver's dog, who had been in the vehicle at the time of the crash, was seriously injured and later succumbed to its injuries.

Hernando County Fire Rescue transported Jowers to the hospital, where he received treatment before his arrest. Upon his release from medical care, he was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center. He is currently being held on a $3,000 bond.
