A 51-year-old Perkins man, Wayne Leo Chance, has been apprehended following allegations of impersonating a law enforcement officer and issuing terroristic threats. The GBI has handed Chance one count of Disorderly Conduct, four counts of Terroristic Threats, and a count of Impersonating a Police Officer, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
Last Friday, the Jenkins County Sheriff's Office had contacted the GBI to probe into the claims involving an individual acting as an officer of the law, an investigation ensued, and Chance emerged as the key suspect in this case, he purportedly accosted a group of four, who were riding ATVs along a county-managed roadway by using a civilian vehicle that was equipped with activated construction-style warning lights to misrepresent himself as a police figure and threatened the ATV riders with violence the GBI detailed.
The case took a turn on Tuesday when Chance presented himself to the Jenkins County Jail, culminating in his arrest. The GBI noted that the investigation is ongoing, and upon completion, the case will transition to the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, where the prosecution preparations will ensue.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the motivations leading Chance to pose as a police officer and the specific nature of the threats made remain to be clarified as the GBI proceeds with their inquiries.
