On July 1, Drexel University became a crossroads of ideas and aspirations as it hosted the Mandela Washington Fellowship, highlighting the U.S. Government's commitment to engaging with young leaders from Sub-Saharan Africa. The Office for People with Disabilities was present, taking an active role in the discussions that saw 25 leaders from across Africa seeking to drive progress in their communities. The Mandela Washington Fellowship, a centerpiece of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) since 2014, has welcomed over 7,000 visionaries keen on fostering innovation and positive impact within their countries.
The Philadelphia-based Office for People with Disabilities found itself amidst vibrant conversations with Ugandan, Nigerian, and Zimbabwean leaders. These interactions, according to the Philadelphia government's website, were centered around increasing awareness and enacting policy changes for people with disabilities back in the fellows' home countries. Advocacy and policy are often a dance of two steps forward, one step back, but these fellows are intent on nothing short of leaps and bounds.
A notable visit mentioned on the city's website on July 21st highlighted the impact of the program on a personal level. A visiting Fellow from Nigeria, who is deaf, sought to understand more about the Office's work. The aim: to bring home the insights necessary to fight for the rights of people with disabilities in Nigeria. The Fellow was particularly impressed by Philadelphia's accessible transportation system, which stands in stark contrast to the current situation in Nigeria, where similar accessibility remains an aspiration rather than a reality.
