The tragic death of 10-year-old Rebekah Baptiste has left a community in mourning and seeking answers after the girl was found in severe distress in a remote part of Apache County on July 27. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, Rebekah was unresponsive when she was discovered, and she was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where she later died.
Prosecutors pointed to what they described as "long-term, horrendous abuse" as the cause of her death, revealing that Rebekah suffered from severe brain bleeding that left her brain-dead, as per FOX 10 Phoenix. Her father, Richard Baptiste, and his girlfriend, Anicia Woods, face first-degree murder and child abuse charges, with court documents indicating the girl's frequent need for medical care due to similar injuries.
In a statement obtained by KGNS, one doctor referred to the inflicted abuse as "torture." Amidst the legal proceedings, Damon Hawkins, Rebekah's uncle, voiced his heartbreak, stating, "She was black and blue from her head to toe. She had two black eyes, and they're thinking the cause of death was because of a hemorrhage." The indictment against Baptiste and Woods has been updated to include charges related to child abuse concerning Rebekah’s two younger brothers, who are now in DCS custody. Both Baptiste and Woods remain held on a $1 million bond.
