A pedestrian lost his life yesterday morning after a vehicle struck him in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Vine Street and Fifth Avenue, as reported by WPXI. Authorities identified the victim as Andre Reynolds, 65, who succumbed to a "significant head injury" at an area hospital a few hours following the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck involved in the tragic accident has been charged with multiple offenses. Kamal Prasad Upreti, 34, of Pittsburgh, is accused of being under the influence of alcohol, hitting an excavator with his truck, and fatally injuring Reynolds, who was found lying unconscious inside the excavator. Court records note that the police came upon the crash site while driving down Fifth Avenue. Two bystanders and a third individual approached them; the latter, who appeared to be intoxicated, was identified as Upreti and was subsequently detained.
Surveillance footage from the area obtained by police showcased the truck traveling improperly and colliding with the excavator before the driver exited and attempted to leave the scene. He later returned to the vehicle, only to leave again before being pursued by bystanders. Upreti now faces charges of driving under the influence and failing to stop and give information or render aid, according to the information provided by public safety officials. He is presently held at the Allegheny County Jail and was denied bail, as specified by court records shared by WTAE.
