A quiet Monday afternoon near Pittsburgh's 31st Street Bridge was suddenly interrupted by police sirens as a major operation unfolded. According to WPXI, two men are now in custody following a chain of events that began as a carjacking investigation and culminated in a dramatic vehicle pursuit.
Stationed at strategic positions around the 31st Street Bridge, police units were forced to draw their weapons when the pursuit initiated from Route 65, spiraling into a hectic chase. Picked up by a plate reader, the white Hyundai implicated in the earlier carjacking hit on Route 65 in Bellevue was subsequently trailed by the authorities to a McDonald’s and Shell gas station, WPXI reported. Attempting to escape, Duane Jemison—the driver—bailed from the vehicle, plunging beneath the bridge after colliding with another car, which fortunately did not lead to injuries.
In a scene of methodical police work, the passenger, identified as Vaughn Hall, was apprehended on the bridge's on-ramp, while Jemison was later extracted from the water. As confirmed by WPXI, Jemison is facing multiple charges, including robbery, while Hall is charged with a prior, unrelated shooting. Separately, a Stowe Township Police Department detective linked the incident to the theft of the Hyundai during an overnight carjacking.
Ongoing with the law enforcement saga, patrons at a nearby restaurant found themselves entangled amidst the chaos. "We were trying to get down here to the restaurant, and it took some time because everything was kind of blocked off and the helicopters were going around, but we had no idea what was wrong," Pauline Parker described her experience in an interview given to WTAE.
The conclusion of the pursuit led to the temporary closure of the 31st Street Bridge, contributing to the intense traffic backups that confronted the city.
