A Massachusetts man has received a prison sentence of 46 years for sexually exploiting minors in his home and possessing child pornography. Justin Benoit, a 39-year-old Pittsfield resident, was sentenced in federal court in Springfield after pleading guilty to five counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography in May this year, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The announcement detailed Benoit's deplorable actions which included documentation of sexual abuse of minors and the possession of hundreds of files of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). His predatory behavior was characterized as “diabolical” by United States Attorney Leah B. Foley, who noted that Benoit targeted "innocent young children." Foley added, "Each image that he captured will result in an eternity of trauma and revictimization on these children."
Federal agents arrested Benoit on February 15, 2022. Investigators discovered CSAM files uploaded to the internet by the defendant in November of the preceding year, prompting a search of his home where electronic devices filled with hundreds of CSAM files were found. Foley stressed the severe impact of Benoit’s crimes, remarking, "He is every parent’s worst nightmare." The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Luke A. Goldworm and Jessica L. Soto of the Major Crimes Unit, with Goldworm also acting as Project Safe Childhood Coordinator.
Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, Ted E. Docks, described Benoit's actions as “morally reprehensible." Docks expressed that the society would be safer with Benoit incarcerated, unable to inflict harm on others. The investigation revealed that Benoit possessed around 130 files that documented his rape and sexual exploitation of two minor females and one minor male, with some occurrences happening under his care. The abuse spanned between February 2021 and February 2022.
Benoit has been sentenced to 10 years of supervised release following his imprisonment and will be required to register as a sex offender. He has also been ordered to pay full restitution to his victims. Alongside the efforts of the U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI, the case saw valuable assistance from the Massachusetts State Police, the Pittsfield Police Department, and the Berkshire County District Attorney's Office. This case comes under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child exploitation and abuse, which leverages the support of various levels of law enforcement to locate and prosecute offenders, and rescue victims.
