The political tension between Governor Kathy Hochul and Rep. Elise Stefanik, a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump, is escalating as attention turns toward the 2026 gubernatorial race. Hochul has sharply criticized Republican members of Congress, including Stefanik, for supporting proposed federal Medicaid cuts, which she argues could harm New York’s healthcare system. In an interview with ABC 7, as cited by Gothamist, Hochul emphasized the potential risks, stating, "That's what should give people great pause."
Stefanik, who has yet to confirm her bid for governor, retorted by denouncing Hochul's administration. A spokesperson for Stefanik, Wendell Husebo, claimed her efforts bolstered rural healthcare, labeling the state's spending under Hochul as "catastrophic" and "unsustainable." Husebo told Gothamist, "Far Left NY Democrats like Kathy Hochul continue to fearmonger because they know that President Trump and Elise Stefanik are delivering results for the American people."
The disagreement between Governor Hochul and Rep. Stefanik extends beyond Medicaid policy. Hochul’s positions on immigration and New York’s sanctuary policies have also drawn criticism from Stefanik. In response to Hochul’s remarks on Medicaid, Stefanik posted on social media, accusing the governor of "putting New Yorkers most vulnerable LAST" by expanding Medicaid coverage to undocumented immigrants, according to The New York Post, further intensifying the ongoing clash.
The confrontation escalates as Stefanik continues to jockey for a central role in the state's Republican narrative. She recently established 'Save New York,' a new state political action committee signaling her intent to further solidify her political influence, The New York Post reported.
