A wildfire that forced evacuations across Yuba County's Oregon House area is now 55% contained after burning 87 acres, with the cause traced to an accidental ignition from vehicle maintenance work. The Ponderosa Fire, which began Saturday afternoon when someone using an impact wrench generated enough friction to ignite dry grass, tested firefighting resources across the region's challenging backcountry terrain.

According to CAL FIRE, the blaze started at 3:06 PM on August 10 along Ponderosa Way north of Sunset Road. YubaNet reported that CAL FIRE Prevention Officers identified the cause as accidental, with a person working on a vehicle with an impact wrench causing sufficient friction to generate enough heat to ignite seasonal grasses.

Difficult Terrain Complicates Response

The fire's remote location created immediate challenges for suppression crews. It's "all dirt roads, limited access, and very, very difficult to get to. So it took the crews an extended period of time to gain entry and actually start their firefight," Chris Baldoni, a battalion chief with Cal Fire Nevada, told KCRA.

The incident commander initially reported 40-50 acres with spotting and medium to dangerous rate of spread, according to YubaNet, with potential for 200-300 acres. The fire burned in brush and oak woodlands in an area described as Ponderosa Road above Lake Collins west of Frenchtown in Yuba County.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

Around 1,500 residents were placed under evacuation orders or warnings, as reported by KCRA. Evacuation orders were issued for zones YUB-E094, YUB-E093 and YUB-E089, with an evacuation center established at the Alcouffe Center at 9185 Marysville Road in Oregon House.

The firefighting response included significant air resources, with air attack requesting three Firehawk helicopters with nighttime-flight capabilities, plus one additional Type 1 and one Type 3 air tanker, according to YubaNet. Three Cal Fire nighttime flying helicopters monitored the fire overnight.

Current Status and Ongoing Precautions

As of the latest update, the fire remains at 55% containment with no reported injuries or structure damage. Zone YUB-E094-C remains under an evacuation order, covering the area North Of Sunset Rd, South Of Pine Ridge Dr, East Of Willow Glen Rd and West Of Peppertree Ln, while several other zones remain under evacuation warning.

The Ponderosa Fire occurs during what CAL FIRE describes as an active fire season, with spring 2025 being warmer and drier than normal across California. Northern California experienced below-normal rainfall and about 2,400 lightning strikes—well below the 10-year average. Wildfire activity is already trending above normal, with Northern California seeing a sharp rise in daily fires during May, including notable grassland incidents.
