The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has its sights set on a possible car gathering and street takeover event being organized via social media for the coming weekend in inner southeast Portland. According to the City of Portland, the safety concerns surrounding such activities confirm that officers will be on duty specifically to thwart any reckless driving practices that may ensue.
In recent months, the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has cracked down on similar events, resulting in multiple arrests and, in some cases, vehicle seizures. As per the recent announcement, several cars have been towed, and their owners have been issued citations. The PPB, in coordination with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, has been actively enforcing Oregon's new Reckless Driving law (ORS 811.140), which allows for the criminal forfeiture of vehicles used in street racing.
The legislation puts pressure not just on those behind the wheel but also extends its reach to anyone involved in the organization or assistance of such illicit gatherings. As detailed in Oregon Revised Statutes 811.127, facilitating, aiding, or disrupting public roadways for racing can lead to misdemeanor charges, and repeat offenses within five years escalate to felonies.
