Residents and commuters in Waxahachie are adjusting their routes as the Union Pacific Railroad, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation, initiates a temporary closure of multiple railroad crossings. The shutdown affects Monroe Street (US 77 South), Elm Street (US 77 North), and Ferris Avenue and is a direct consequence of the recent train derailment that necessitated immediate repair works.
The closures are scheduled for the hours between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM, encompassing the course of both Thursday, July 31, and Friday, August 1. During these intervals, work crews will be on-site conducting a cleanup, repairing rough edges and joints, as well as replacing the pavement transitions at the crossing. This endeavor is part of an effort to provide a "smooth and permanent asphalt transition," according to a statement on the Ellis County website.
For those seeking to navigate around the affected area, alternative detour routes have been announced. These include Rogers Street, College Street, Gibson Street, Patrick Street, and Grand Avenue, all of which will remain accessible throughout the roadwork and can be utilized to cross the railroad tracks.
