According to the City of Raleigh's press release, when a signal loses power, it automatically switches to a backup battery for temporary operation. If the outage lasts longer, the intersection becomes a four-way stop until power is restored. Many intersections are equipped with sensors in the pavement or cameras on poles to detect vehicles. These tools allow the signals to adjust timing based on real-time traffic conditions.
The system is regularly inspected, and residents are encouraged to report issues through the Ask Raleigh platform. The city’s Transportation team then responds to ensure signals continue operating smoothly.
