Raleigh commuters faced surprise disruptions yesterday as an emergency closure on Tryon Road threw a wrench in their usual transit. According to the City of Raleigh, the 4400 block near Brisk Gallop Way has been completely shut down for urgent repairs to a significant sewer main break.
With safety concerns at the forefront, the Raleigh Water team has put a firm roadblock in place, leaving no one with the choice but to seek alternate routes. Signaling a detour, eastbound traffic since Sunday, August 17, has been redirected left onto Avent Ferry Road, then a right onto Lake Dam Road guides them back to Tryon Road. This sudden reroute, sprung up by the exigencies of repair, is set to stay until further notice.
Assessing the damage has led to the revelation that the sewer main suffered more than a superficial wound. The City of Raleigh officials stated that "Our Sewer Maintenance crews have determined the damage to the main is extensive and requires more significant repairs." To manage the wastewater flow most effectively in the interim, they've placed a pumping system as of last night. Concerned with potential complications, a crew remained on site through the night to keep a vigilant eye on this improvised setup.
Even as the roadway's heart is laid open by crews hustling to stitch it back together, those concerned about their water and sewer services can draw a breath of relief. "Please be assured that nearby water and sewer services should not be affected," says Raleigh Water.
