In a move aimed to slightly ease the burden on taxpayers, Rockdale County has officially reduced its millage rate, as decided in a recent public meeting by the Board of Commissioners. Held on Tuesday, the gathering marked a critical vote that would determine the 2025 property tax rates that affect both businesses and homeowners in the locale.
The millage rate, essentially a figure that gives shape to calculate local property taxes, has seen a minor decrease from its previous 18.69 to a new rate of 18.284. This figure means that for every $1,000 in assessed property value, Rockdale County residents will now pay $18.284, a change intended to slightly lighten the fiscal load carried by the community. According to the official county statement, this gesture is a response to public appeals for a more affordable living and a declaration of financial transparency by county officials.
The millage rate's adjustment was influenced by several key county entities, including the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners, Rockdale County Board of Education, and the City of Conyers. Each group is responsible for setting portions of the overall rate, but the Board of Commissioners specifically governs the County's share, which backs essential services such as public safety, court services, road management, and other county operations.
Expressing the intent behind the board’s decision, Chairwoman JaNice Van Ness remarked, "Lowering the millage rate is a direct response to what our residents have been asking for. It’s a step toward building trust and making Rockdale County more affordable for everyone," as stated by the county’s news release. Commissioner Doreen Williams added, “We’ve heard our community, and this moment is about honoring that trust," and Commissioner Tuwanya Smith asserted that “This vote reflects our ongoing promise to serve the people of Rockdale and to put the community first.”
