In a gesture of remembrance and tribute, Roswell has dedicated one of its most traversed interchanges to the late Officer Jeremy Labonte, who was fatally shot in February while on duty. The Georgia 400 and Holcomb Bridge Road intersection now carries his name, preserving the memory of the city's first law enforcement officer to fall in the line of duty, as reported by WSBTV.
The change follows the passing of the resolution by State Senator John Albers and the subsequent signing into law by the governor the interchange's renaming has shown the state's commitment to honor Officer Labonte's ultimate sacrifice, his widow Alyssa Labonte conveyed her pride and appreciation for the gesture, saying, "We miss him every day, and obviously we’d rather have him here with us, but it makes me really proud to know his name and sacrifice won’t be forgotten," in a statement obtained by WSBTV.
As per FOX 5 Atlanta's coverage, the Labonte family took part in the sign unveiling about an hour after its official dedication and Alyssa Labonte has spoken about the immense support she has received during this period stating, "It has been overwhelming, I feel both exhausted and just really grateful for the community and all my friends and family that continue to show up for me."
Celebrating his life, the city also held a 5K in Officer Labonte's honor and Alyssa commemorated her late husband with a tattoo that reads ‘I love you more’ in his handwriting one of the last messages he shared with her according to a FOX 5 Atlanta interview, "He called me on his way into work, and that was the last thing that he said to me, and it was kind of always our thing to say to each other since we were in high school," she shared.
The suspect involved in Officer Labonte's death is currently incarcerated and has entered a not guilty plea, and while the legal process continues.
