Sacramento International Airport has shattered its all-time passenger record, welcoming more than 1.29 million travelers in June 2025—the busiest month in the airport's history. The milestone represents a significant shift in typical travel patterns, as July has traditionally been the airport's peak month.
According to FOX40, Sacramento International Airport (SMF) recorded exactly 1,296,818 passengers during June. The record culminates 19 months of consistent year-over-year growth at SMF, which served 13,822,315 passengers in fiscal year 2025—also setting a new annual record.
Strategic Growth and Expansion
The airport's expansion efforts are paying dividends, with officials attributing the success to strategic partnerships and enhanced service offerings. "SMF's recent growth is no accident—it's the result of strong airline partnerships," Stephen Clark, Deputy Director of Commercial Development for the Sacramento County Department of Airports, told ABC10. "And we're just getting started. Securing SMF's first transoceanic flight remains a top priority."
The airport now offers more than 202 peak day flights on 11 domestic and international carriers, connecting travelers to destinations across North America and beyond. SMF is expanding its global reach while working toward securing transoceanic flight service.
Economic Impact and Infrastructure Investment
The record-breaking performance highlights the economic impact of strategic infrastructure investment in the region. "Breaking this passenger record highlights the power of smart, strategic investment in public infrastructure," Board Chairman and First District Supervisor Phil Serna said in a statement to ABC10. "SMF continues to drive growth, tourism, and regional connectivity, all of which contribute to a stronger economy for the people of Sacramento County."
Airport Director Cindy Nichol emphasized the operational achievement behind the numbers. "We are proud to serve so many travelers in our region and support our community's business and leisure needs," she told ABC10. "It takes a huge and talented team to serve over one million travelers each month."
Looking Ahead
With July traditionally serving as SMF's busiest month, the airport expects continued strong performance through the summer travel season. The sustained growth trajectory positions Sacramento International Airport as a major player in West Coast aviation, with officials confident that the momentum will carry into the fall months and beyond.
