Residents of North Highlands experienced tension last night as deputies from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office engaged in a standoff with a vandalism suspect, ultimately detaining him after a prolonged negotiation. The suspect, 40-year-old Jeremiah Rhey, was reported to have caused a disturbance in the 3800 block of Lankershim Way by vandalizing a relative's car and evading the scene initially. This information was detailed in a social media post by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began nearing 8 PM when deputies arrived on scene, learning Rhey had torn off a wiper blade and escaped. His family members expressed to deputies their concern; they stated that Rhey had wished for deputies to shoot him, an unsettling occurance before he came back to further vandalize the car with spray paint and threaten arson on the family member's dwelling. Officials were on his tail, responding to the scene in under five minutes to his malicious encore, but Rhey had already fled once again, this time in a vehicle.
As the night progressed, authorities spotted the suspect driving near Watt Avenue and A Street. Efforts to pull Rhey over at around 4 AM led him to a gas station near Elkhorn Boulevard and Walerga Road, where he stalled, refusing to get out of the car. Given Rhey's previous threats and erratic behavior, additional resources - including the Sheriff’s Critical Incident Negotiations Team and Special Enforcement Detail (SWAT) - were brought in as a preventive measure.
Deputies attempted to persuade a standoff for over two hours that Rhey surrendered himself peacefully. Their efforts culminated successfully when Rhey exited his vehicle and surrendered shortly after 6:30 AM. Following the standoff, with Rhey relinquishing himself to the authorities, he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on several felony charges and is held on $5000 bail, awaiting his court appearance tomorrow,. August 13. Consistent with California law, Rhey's booking photo is withheld from public release.
