Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a possible explosive device discovered near an apartment complex in Carmichael Sunday morning. The incident has drawn specialized bomb disposal teams to the quiet residential area as authorities work to determine the nature of the suspicious object.
According to KCRA, the investigation began when Sacramento Metro Fire crews responded to reports of an unknown cylinder in the middle of Mission Avenue around 9:30 a.m. Fire officials then requested assistance from the sheriff's office explosive ordnance disposal team to assess the potential threat.
The discovery occurred in the 3500 block of Mission Avenue, a densely populated section of the Carmichael area that houses both residential complexes and community facilities. KCRA reports that no evacuations have been ordered at this time, suggesting authorities may have determined the device poses a contained risk.
Recent History of Explosive Incidents
This incident adds to a troubling pattern of explosive device discoveries in the Sacramento region. Most notably, a February 2021 case involved a Carmichael resident whose home contained an extensive weapons cache including grenade launchers and ammunition stockpiles.
As reported by KCRA, Bradley Imre Bodai, 38, was arrested after authorities discovered the arsenal, which included three sticks of dynamite with a charge timer. That incident prompted evacuation of 1,800 residences within a half-mile radius as bomb disposal experts secured the area.
The Mission Avenue corridor serves as a vital transportation route connecting residential neighborhoods with local schools and businesses, including Mission Avenue Open Elementary School located several blocks from the current investigation site. Any prolonged closure could impact traffic patterns throughout the area, though authorities have not indicated whether roadways remain affected.
KCRA notes this remains a developing story, with authorities yet to release details about the cylinder's composition or whether it poses an actual threat. The involvement of the Sheriff's Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal team indicates the device is being treated with appropriate caution while specialists determine its potential danger.
Residents in the immediate area should follow guidance from law enforcement and avoid the scene to allow specialists to work safely. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available from investigating authorities.
