Following a federal grand jury indictment, Joseph Allen Davis, a 19-year-old resident of Sacramento, faces charges related to firearm possession by a convicted felon. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the indictment issued connects to a prior incident dated April 12, where Davis allegedly engaged in a shooting that injured three at Rainbow City Park in Davis.
After the shooting at Rainbow City Park, law enforcement started an investigation on Davis, implicating him in the gunfire exchange. Executing a search warrant at Davis's apartment, officers discovered a short-barrel AR-15-style pistol. Given Davis’s history, having a felony gun possession on record, possessing the firearm contravened legal stipulations. The series of these events, as stated by U.S. Attorney Eric Grant, illustrate a depiction of accountability sought against firearms misuse and violent crime.
Several agencies worked together on the investigation, including the FBI, Davis and Sacramento Police Departments, and the Yolo and Sacramento County District Attorney’s Offices. The prosecutors in the case, Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Lee and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew De Moura, will base their arguments against Davis, who will stand trial on the charges filed.
If convicted, Davis could face a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Although the indictment includes allegations, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The verdict will be decided by the court, which will take into account federal sentencing guidelines and applicable statutory factors.
This indictment links Davis's case to Operation Take Back America, a Justice Department initiative aimed at coordinating efforts against illegal immigration, cartel activities, and transnational criminal organizations. At the same time, it falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a DOJ program focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence through comprehensive enforcement and prevention strategies to promote safer communities.
