A 37-year-old Sacramento County man is facing serious charges after allegedly attempting to set his family home on fire with his elderly parents trapped inside following a heated argument. The incident unfolded last Saturday evening in the 3600 block of 45th Avenue.
According to CBS Sacramento, deputies learned that Somekitt Say got into an argument with his 80-year-old father before allegedly attempting arson. Deputies responded to the location around 5 p.m. for what was initially reported as a welfare check, but the situation proved far more serious than anticipated.
Family Members Prevent Tragedy
The quick thinking of other family members likely prevented a catastrophic outcome. ABC10 reports that other family members were nearby and were able to put the fire out before it spread. The fire was extinguished before emergency personnel arrived at the scene, potentially saving the lives of the elderly couple inside.
Say fled the scene after the incident but didn't get far. Deputies later located him nearby and took him into custody without incident, according to CBS Sacramento.
Serious Charges and No Bail
Say was arrested and booked into jail, where deputies said he's ineligible for bail, as reported by CBS Sacramento. The charges he faces stem from what authorities describe as an attempt to harm his elderly parents in their own home.
California law treats arson involving inhabited dwellings with extreme seriousness, especially when it involves vulnerable populations like elderly individuals who may have limited ability to escape.
Investigation Continues
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident as the case moves through the legal system.
