The City of San Antonio extends an artistic call to action for its younger generation. To honor the impactful legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the 11th Annual MLK Youth Art Contest is officially open for submissions, as reported by SA.gov. This creative invitation coincides with the anniversary of the iconic "I Have a Dream" speech delivered by Dr. King on August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

San Antonio's youngsters have until October 9, at 4:30 p.m. to share their visual interpretations that reflect this year's theme, "Diversity Unites Us: Love Leads Us & Action Propels Us!" The contest is exclusively offered to Bexar County residents who are 18 and under. Selected artworks have the unique opportunity to be showcased on the official marketing materials for the upcoming 2026 MLK March and Commemoration, slated for January 19, 2026. Interested artists can find full contest guidelines and submission information at SA.gov/MLK, which also highlights that submissions leveraging Artificial Intelligence or copyrighted material are off the table.

Emphasizing the significance of the youth's perspective, District 2 Councilmember Leo Castillo-Anguiano told SA.gov, "The Youth Art Contest is an opportunity for our youth to personally interpret and express the messages taught by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," further stating, "Our community can learn so much from our young people. I’m very excited to see their artwork inspired by diversity, love, and action."

Entrants are encouraged to explore various traditional two-dimensional mediums, including painting, photography, computer graphics, and work with colored pencils, markers, or crayons. A group of judges is set to appraise submissions based on an array of criteria: concept, artistic expression, visual presentation, and originality. The top pick and their winning artwork will be directly notified, with the MLK Commission preparing for a public announcement thereafter.

This contest, which began in 1987, is part of San Antonio's broader commemorative initiatives that pay tribute to the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., culminating in one of the largest marches in the nation.
