The San Antonio Metro Health District announced the season’s first positive sample of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus in the north central area near West Avenue and Blanco Road. As part of routine surveillance, the district stated that spraying will take place in the area at 3 a.m. to help prevent the spread, according to the City of San Antonio.
Mosquito control treatments are set to take place on Wednesday, though they may be postponed if weather conditions require. Spray trucks will move through designated areas, and residents in those zones are advised to remain indoors during the operation. To help reduce mosquito breeding and the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, officials urge residents to regularly remove standing water from items such as buckets, planters, toys, and trash containers, as reported by the City of San Antonio.
Metro Health advises using repellents with DEET or Picaridin when outdoors, especially at dusk and dawn, and wearing long sleeves, pants, and socks for added protection. Residents are reminded to keep mosquitoes out of their homes by maintaining window and door screens, and using air conditioning when available. Additional prevention tips are available on the Metro Health website, as stated by the City of San Antonio.
