In a recent crackdown on freeway violence, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Golden Gate Division detectives apprehended a 24-year-old San Jose man in connection with a rush-hour shooting that occurred earlier this month. The suspect, identified as Stefan Mercado, was arrested last Thursday, as reported in a social media post by the CHP Golden Gate Division.

The case swiftly escalated when detectives were alerted to a two-vehicle crash on SR-84, west of I-880 in Newark, last Tuesday. It became clear this was no ordinary traffic incident when, shortly after, a local hospital reported a man walking into their emergency room with a gunshot wound, sustained in what was discovered to be a road rage incident. With haste, detectives obtained and served a warrant for Mercado's arrest.

Assisting in the operation, the Palo Alto Police Department spotted Mercado driving in their jurisdiction, which led to his arrest around 6:45 p.m. Post-arrest, detectives conducted a search at Mercado's residence, where they discovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Mercado now faces charges including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, the details of which were posted on social media by the CHP Golden Gate Division.

Reflecting on the arrest, CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Don Goodbrand provided a statement, acknowledging the collaborative effort leading to Mercado's capture, "Our detectives' swift work has once again led to the arrest of a dangerous criminal who chose to endanger the public by engaging in gun violence on our freeways." Chief Goodbrand also thanked the Palo Alto Police Department for supporting the operation. Mercado was booked into Santa Rita Jail following the decisive action by law enforcement officers.
