Following an investigation, it was found that the driver—later identified as Kevin Eric Allen, a 34-year-old resident of San Rafael—had left a party and was in the process of misjudging when attempting to park his car severely. After hitting a curb earlier, Allen did not properly engage the vehicle's parking gear upon arriving home. As a result, the car began to roll back, ejecting Allen and continuing its driverless journey until coming to a halt in a neighbor's yard. This series of missteps led to Allen being booked into Marin County Jail for DUI, as stated by the San Rafael Police Department.
In their social media update, the San Rafael Police Department made it clear that this incident should remind others about the dangers of drinking and driving. They concluded with advice, suggesting, "Avoid tragedy and an arrest by always designating a sober driver or using a rideshare service, a taxi, or public transit."
