Sanford Police have apprehended a man after it came to light that he had been engaging in sexual acts with a 12-year-old girl, events that unfolded after he reportedly met the child on Instagram and subsequently snuck into her bedroom through a window. The man, identified as 23-year-old John Jennings, Jr., was arrested on charges of lewd and lascivious battery, with ClickOrlando reporting that Jennings had made multiple trips to the victim's home before the sexual activity occurred.
According to the Sanford Police Department and as reported by ClickOrlando, on August 6, the victim's parent alerted authorities, leading to an investigation that uncovered Jennings had arranged several clandestine meetings with the girl, where he did engage in sexual acts with the victim, having entered through her window while her parents were unaware and asleep, these meetings had taken place over an unspecified period of time.
An arrest warrant was released for Jennings last Thursday, with his subsequent arrest facilitated by the Polk County Sheriff's Office. As of the latest reports, Jennings is awaiting transfer to Seminole County, according to WESH. Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith issued a statement underscoring the need for parental vigilance in the digital age, “Social media has the power to connect communities for good, but it can also be a tool for those who seek to prey on others," he stated, “With this in mind, it is clear that parents must be watchful of their children's online activities, educate them on online safety, and monitor their ever-evolving online social life.”
