In a continued effort to curb the spate of retail crime plaguing the Bay Area, Santa Clara County's District Attorney's office is pushing for incarceration for a man implicated in an extensive theft ring that has hit multiple Home Depot stores. Adolfo Duarte Herrera, whose sentencing was postponed, is at the eye of a legal storm, with authorities seeking to make an example out of this case.

"These are not shoplifters," District Attorney Jeff Rosen affirmed in a statement, per ABC7 News. "This is a determined, destructive and dangerous thieving crew of individuals." Prosecutors have voiced their discontent with the proposed sentence for Duarte Herrera, highlighting the string of nearly 200 thefts at Home Depot stores in every Bay Area county over four months.

The criminal outfit's extensive spree reportedly accounted for more than $65,000 in stolen goods, with items being offloaded at local flea markets. As Mercury News reported, during one scheduled probation check-in, Duarte Herrera feigned sickness only to commit yet another theft, reinforcing the DA's stance that anything less than prison is a miscarriage of justice.

Under a new state law, prosecutors have been able to consolidate theft charges from separate counties, a legal maneuver Rosen describes as perfect for tackling widespread criminal networks. The consolidation of alleged thefts originates from various counties, including Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin. Larry Caylor, an asset protection director for Home Depot, emphasized the broader repercussions of these thefts: "This isn't just about business losses," Caylor told ABC7 News, "it's about protecting people who shop, work and live in our communities."
