Marking two decades of public service, the Scottsdale Fire Department is looking to the future with a series of investments aimed at augmenting its capabilities and coverage across the city. A budget for the fiscal year 2025/26 was announced, revealing a multi-departmental effort involving the Fire Department, the City Manager's Office, and other city entities, all reinforced by the city's leadership. Fire Chief Tom Shannon was quoted in a statement obtained by Scottsdaleaz.gov appreciating the "direct reflection of our city's leadership and their steadfast commitment to public safety."
Investment highlights include the establishment of Fire Station 612, designed to boost response in the area surrounding Scottsdale Airpark and Loop 101, and the reintroduction of Engine Company 6012 at Station 601, to aim to ensure rapid response in one of Scottsdale's busiest zones. There's also talk of broadening Scottsdale's ambulance network with three new units set to launch by the year's end. These moves indicate the city's proactive approach to scale its emergency services with growing demand.
On top of these enhancements, the Scottsdale Fire Department is also implementing robust training programs and advancing staff development in areas like hazardous materials and wildland urban interface operations. Funding will flow into initiatives such as a second Technical Rescue Team, geared towards tackling emergencies in the popular McDowell Sonoran Preserve. These funds originate partly from the Parks and Preserve sales tax that voters approved in the previous year.
Wildfire mitigation also stands as a priority, with the city amping up its efforts to reduce risks in desert landscapes through a stable funding scheme, established by the same sales tax, to counter fire fuel sources. City Manager Greg Caton told Scottsdaleaz.gov that these investments are in place to not only honor the department’s legacy but to ensure it's fully equipped to meet the community's evolving needs.
Since the Fire Department's inception in 2005, its teams have responded to more than 500,000 calls. Marking its 20th anniversary, Scottsdale is investing in expanded fire services to meet the safety and emergency needs of its residents now and in the future.
