Tragedy unfolded outside a University District church near the University of Washington yesterday evening as a 28-year-old father was fatally shot, leaving community members shaken. Seattle police indicated that the violence, resulting in the city's 23rd homicide of the year, seemed to be a calculated act. Police Chief Shon Barnes, who was on-site, detailed law enforcement efforts to provide life-saving measures to no avail. In a statement obtained by KING5, Barnes described the suspect's escape in a distinctive white Hyundai Elantra with black wheels and a damaged front passenger window.
Witnesses near the scene recounted the harrowing moments. Jack Talluto, Bryce Herbel, and Brian Park, amid moving out from a neighboring house, heard what Talluto described: “We heard a lot of shots, it sounded like a machine gun.” The violence, leaving blood everywhere was corroborated by Herbel's impression of the area being accustomed to "unsafe stuff" as he told The Seattle Times. Herbel added his lack of surprise over such an incident occurring.
Further information regarding the suspect and their likely pathway post-incident was shared via the University of Washington's blog. Described as a man in a black hoodie, the suspect reportedly headed eastbound on 50th Avenue NE following the shooting. KOMO News also acquired witness accounts, suggesting multiple shots fired in what may have been a drive-by attack. The blog stated that the suspect's vehicle was then seen fleeing northbound from NE 47th Street and 17th Ave. NE, broadening the area's sense of insecurity.
Seattle Police, currently investigating the incident as a targeted attack, call for any information regarding the suspect.
