Senator Derek Mallow from Savannah has announced the closure of two International Paper Mills in the Savannah and Riceboro areas, a move that's set to affect approximately 1,100 employees. The senator shared his concerns and promises of support to the workers in what he called "challenging times" for the community.
In a statement obtained by Senate Press, Mallow expressed his disappointment over the decision, which not only affects the Savannah containerboard mill and packaging facility, but also the Riceboro containerboard mill, and the Riceboro Timber and Lumber. The loss of these mills, will undoubtedly send ripples across local families and the economy.
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Mallow has been in contact with International Paper's Government Relations Director and has been assured that the company will coordinate with the Georgia Department of Labor to facilitate the transition for affected employees. International Paper has also committed to providing severance packages and outplacement assistance.
"I have already spoken with International Paper's Government Relations Director, who confirmed that the company is coordinating with the Georgia Department of Labor to assist affected employees during this transition," Mallow told Senate Press. "International Paper has committed to providing severance packages and outplacement assistance to support employees during this transition."
Mallow emphasized his dedication to ensuring that International Paper follows through with its promises to the workforce. He acknowledged the service and commitment of the employees to the company over the years and pledged to advocate for their needs. "We owe it to the men and women who dedicated their careers to this company to guarantee they are supported with the resources, training and assistance necessary to move forward," he stated, reflecting a commitment to uniting the community in the face of adversity.
