Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) held town hall meetings in both Globe and Apache Junction, where he engaged with local Arizonans on a range of pressing issues. In Globe, the focus was on the challenges faced by rural communities, such as job scarcity, lack of affordable housing, constrained educational funding, and threats posed by GOP policies and the previous Trump administration's austerity measures, as reported by the Senator's official website.
During his conversations in Globe, Gallego expressed his commitment to revitalizing these communities, citing a recent major housing bill aimed at providing relief, especially in rural areas, as the Senator pointed out, “The last thing we want to see is a slower economy, especially in rural Arizona. […] We need some good jobs out here,” Senator Gallego also criticized tariffs and cuts to Medicaid and SNAP, noting that rural residents are more likely to depend on these services, and visited the Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center, which could fall victim to Medicaid funding losses resultant from the GOP's criticized legislation, as per the Senator's official website.
At the subsequent Apache Junction town hall, Gallego's discussion pivoted to address the issues plaguing veterans, in light of the Trump administration's past slashes to veteran services. Gallego stated, "We need the VA fully intact. It’s okay to find efficiencies. It’s okay to look for fraud, waste and abuse. Let’s always find ways to save money while also, of course, keeping services. But let’s do it with thoughtfulness, right? Not just saying, ‘well, I know there’s fraud, waste and abuse, so I’m just going to cut 83,000 people,'" which he implied could have a broader impact on military recruitment in the future, according to the same press release.
Additional concerns were voiced by attendees regarding the aggressive targeting by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, even at sensitive locations such as schools, according to Gallego, “There used to be what’s called a sensitive sites restriction, where you wouldn’t go into churches, hospitals and schools. […] That’s just the line that you shouldn’t draw. […] You’re just going to encourage kids not to go to school, and [there will be] horrible outcomes if kids don’t go to school. We’re looking at what we can do to try to bring those sensitive site protections back,” he emphasized the need for restoring protections and voiced his intention to introduce legislation to protect citizens and veterans from being mistakenly detained by immigration authorities, moreover, in a show of community support, Senator Gallego bestowed a proclamation on the members Marine Corps League 554 Saguaro Detachment in Apache Junction commemorating the Marine Corp's 250th anniversary, marking the third such honor he has presented to Arizona Marine Corps leagues this year, as noted by the Senator's official release.
