With the hot season winding down, Shady Oak Beach is closing its summer chapter on August 17, but not without giving locals a few more days of sun, fun, and the familiar sound of splashes. As reported by the City of Minnetonka's official website, beachgoers have until Wednesday to enjoy the high dive, concessions, and the oh-so-crucial supervision of lifeguards.
But here’s the kicker, after the 17th, those looking to soak up the last rays of summer love can still hit the beach – just without the usual perks from Aug. 23 to Labor Day. "Gates are open daily from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. No admission charged," the city website chirps, but mind you, the lifeguards would have packed up their whistles, and the concession stands won’t be doling out snacks or treats. Look forward to a more, shall we say, "rustic" beach experience.
And for the planners out there, make a little note: on Saturday, Aug. 30, don't bother showing up with your beach towel before noon. Why? Because there's "an earlier event," as the city's announcement puts it. Not much on the details there, but suffice to say, your tan will have to wait until the afternoon.
It's a bittersweet transition as we say goodbye to the full-service beach days and hello to a more DIY beach vibe. The inflatable toys will be gone, diving boards stowed away, and the volleyball nets – well, they're not for autumnal winds. That being said, the beach it’s still a beach. For those who simply love the feel of sand between their toes and the sight of water meeting sky, Shady Oak will still be your slice of nature's pie.
