Tragedy struck Southeast Portland yesterday evening when police responded to reports of a deceased female at a residence on Southeast 170th Avenue. According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers arrived at the scene around 6:30 p.m. after a welfare check was requested, where they found a male suspect who had barricaded himself inside the home, possibly armed Portland.gov reports.
The situation escalated quickly as the police's Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were called in to manage the potentially volatile standoff. The male suspect remained inside the house and was uncooperative, though after several hours, he exited the premises and surrendered to law enforcement officials at approximately 9:00 p.m., shortly thereafter he was transported to an area hospital for medical care; during the operation, a firearm was discovered at the location, as detailed by the city's press release.
The scene turned from a welfare check to a homicide investigation after the SERT breached the home and found a woman deceased. The Portland Police Bureau’s Homicide Unit is now leading the case and appealing to the public for information that could shed light on the circumstances of her death. They urge anyone with knowledge about the incident to contact Detective Samantha Cater or Detective Brent Christensen via their provided email addresses.
Authorities have not released the woman’s identity or her relationship to the male suspect, citing the need to protect the privacy of those involved.
