In a significant escalation of immigration enforcement, the Southern District of Texas U.S. Attorney's Office announced charges against 262 individuals in connection with Operation Take Back America. This operation supports a nationwide initiative aiming to bolster border security and target criminal organizations. According to the same announcement, the cases include charges for illegal reentry by previously deported individuals, illegal entry, human smuggling, and related crimes.
U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei detailed the charges, which span from August 8-14, noting the defendants' backgrounds with a heavy focus on the majority's previous felony convictions encompassing narcotics, violent crimes, sexual offenses, and prior immigration violations. For instance, one of the charged individuals, Osvaldo Martin Acevedo-Rodriguez was found in possession of firearms and drugs during a traffic stop and, if convicted, could face up to 15 years in federal prison. The enforcement efforts also led to a guilty verdict against the owners of Abby’s Bakery and Dulce’s Café in Los Fresnos, accused of employing and housing unlawful workers.
Among the highlighted cases, the U.S. Attorney's Office cites the high-speed chase that resulted in an alleged smuggler, Cesar Rafael Leon clashing with law enforcement vehicles and now facing a potential twenty-year sentence. In another rapid adjudication, Miguel Angel Puac-Ramirez was found guilty of felony reentry after the defense's visual aids failed to sway a jury that deliberated for only 23 minutes before reaching a verdict. The U.S. Attorney's Office, spanning 43 counties, represents the enforcement actions of assistant U.S. attorneys working closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.
