St. Johns County is currently expanding County Road 2209, aiming to ease the daily commute for its growing population. With traffic snarls becoming the norm, this new four-lane corridor is an endeavor to address the bottlenecks, particularly during rush hours. According to an update by St. Johns County, the section stretching from Silverleaf Parkway to State Road 16 will join the ranks of modern thoroughfares designed to cope with increasing vehicular demands.
The ongoing construction of the 3.9-mile segment is just a portion of the larger CR 2209 Central Project, which, upon completion, will cover a span of 7.7 miles from County Road 210 to State Road 16. It’s a considerable venture that includes more than 200 feet of right-of-way, setting the stage, not just for the present but also for future mobility demands. "This project in particular will take a new roadway segment from Silverleaf Parkway all the way down to International Golf Parkway and then further down to State Road 16," County Engineer Duane Kent told St. Johns County.
Work on the project got underway in Spring 2024, and as of now, it's a bit beyond the halfway mark. Despite the complexities that come with such extensive infrastructural feats, St. Johns County anticipates the ribbon cutting will occur in Summer 2026. The thrust behind this, says Kent, is a response to a simple truth. "If anybody drives around St. Johns County, they know the roadway infrastructure is needy," Kent expressed in the project's progress video.
As for the financial gears propelling this expansion, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) isn't merely a bystander, it’s investing several million dollars into the initiative, thus highlighting the project's significance at both county and state levels.
