
An 18-year-old man was arrested by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO) SWAT team on charges of sexually assaulting a minor, among other offenses. According to a social media post by SJSO, Devin James Platt was apprehended following an investigation initiated after a 13-year-old victim reported being provided with alcohol and narcotics by the suspect and then being sexually assaulted.
The Special Victims Unit of the SJSO stated that the investigation began when the victim disclosed the assault. Platt, a man standing 6'7” and weighing 248 lbs, traveled to a location under the pretense of meeting the minor. However, he was instead met by the SJSO SWAT team, leading to his arrest. Because the privacy of the victim, some details of the case are withheld to protect her identity.
Platt faces a series of charges that include Traveling to Meet a Minor for Sex, Lewd or Lascivious Battery, Solicitation of a Minor, Production of Child Sexual Abuse Material, and Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material. The arrest highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of minors in online environments and the predatory tactics individuals can employ to exploit them. The Sheriff's Office has not released further details regarding the specifics of the online interaction or how Platt came into contact with the victim.
