Drivers in Buchanan County will need to brace for some disruptions later this month. The I-229 Double Decker bridge, a pivotal structure in St. Joseph, is due for scheduled maintenance set to begin on August 25. Announced by the Missouri Department of Transportation, the maintenance work will include addressing the bridge’s upkeep needs, along with signage and lighting.
The work will result in a total shutdown of the bridge, affecting both its northbound and southbound flow, around the clock from August 25 through August 28. The closure will span from Highland Avenue up to U.S. Route 36, fundamentally urging all motorists to seek alternative routes, reported Missouri Department of Transportation. With the bridge being a main artery in the town’s transportation network, the closure is expected to not gently inconvenience travelers, who now must plan their commutes with this closure in mind.
Understanding the significant impact on daily commutes, MoDOT urges the community to cooperate during this period. They have called upon drivers to contribute to safety measures by "always buckling up, keeping your phone down, slowing down and moving over in work zones." This plea, aimed at ensuring both driver safety and the safety of the crews on the ground, was emphasized in Missouri Department of Transportation's official closure announcement.
Local businesses and residents have been preparing for the slated closure, advancing plans to detour their usual routes to mitigate the temporary loss of the bridge, which is poised to reconnect swiftly after the four-day maintenance schedule concludes.
