St. Louis has updated its family and medical leave (FML) policy for city employees. Under the new rules, workers must use other accrued leave before accessing paid FML, except in cases of birth, adoption, or foster care placement, where paid leave can be used first.

According to the City of St. Louis website, the changes also end the intermittent use of paid family leave. A separate policy has been established for military leave. The updates are effective immediately.

The city’s paid family and medical leave program was created under Ordinance 71512, passed in 2022. Provisions for unpaid family and medical leave remain unchanged.
