The streets of Walnut Park West became the scene of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of Jawon Deshawn Cooper. According to an update from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), on the night of July 17, just before 10 p.m., officers were alerted to gunfire detected by ShotSpotter technology in the 6000 blocks of Emma and Lucille Avenues—an area now marked by this recent act of violence. As the search for answers continues, SLMPD Homicide Detectives have made significant progress.
Cooper, a 27-year-old resident of St. Louis City, MO, was rushed to a hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds following the incident; sadly, the efforts of medical professionals were in vain as he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, marking yet another life snuffed out in its prime, though it is the nature of this tragedy that reminds us of our own mortal vulnerability and the fragility of our safe havens. The original crime scene was later pinpointed in the 5400 block of Park Lane where the echo of gunshots has since faded.
The SLMPD has arrested two individuals in connection with Cooper's death—a 26-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman whose identities were shared by official sources. Charges against the man include Murder 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm (x2) the woman faces charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Trafficking 2nd Degree in Drugs, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of violent crime and its bedfellows.
