Charges have been filed following a year-long homicide investigation stemming from an incident that occurred in Velda City, Missouri. According to an official release from the St. Louis County Police Department, Me'Kel Walker, a 19-year-old resident of St. Louis, faces allegations of Murder 2nd Degree, Armed Criminal Action, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. These charges relate to a violent event that resulted in the death of Jeremiah Latimore.
Reportedly, an altercation that started on March 8, 2024, at a convenience store located on Jennings Station Road, escalated into a deadly encounter. The altercation ended with Walker allegedly firing his weapon across a public thoroughfare, striking Latimore who later died from a gunshot wound. Walker, held on a $1 million bond, remains incarcerated at the St. Louis City Justice Center. Despite requests, authorities have not released a booking photo as of this writing.
As details emerge, it has been clarified that surveillance footage played a crucial role in the investigation. "Surveillance also shows suspect Me'kel Walker raise a firearm, aim it in the direction of the fleeing victim, and fire the weapon across West Florissant Rd," said the prosecuting attorney’s office. Victim Latimore, although initially able to distance himself from the scene, eventually succumbed to the injuries sustained during the confrontation, as per the St. Louis County Police Department.
The St. Louis County Police Department's Bureau of Crimes Against Persons is managing ongoing inquiries into the case. While the charges against Walker signify a critical step towards legal proceedings, it is essential to remember "charges are merely an accusation, and Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law," according to the St. Louis County Police Department's official statement.
