A recent report from the North Carolina Office of the State Auditor (OSA) found financial issues in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS), including budget overrides, bonuses, and a $46 million deficit for FY 2022 and FY 2023. The audit revealed more than $75 million in bonuses, maintained staffing despite declining student numbers, and 311 budget overrides to approve purchase orders.
The North Carolina Office of the State Auditor report also noted that suspense accounts intended for temporary transactions reached over $332 million and that not all active contracts were reviewed during budget planning. Interim Superintendent Catty Moore has outlined a plan with completion dates to address the findings. The OSA will monitor WS/FCS to ensure implementation of corrective measures.
