The Stockton Police Department is ramping up its efforts to curb impaired driving by conducting a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint today, August 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. The location within the city limits remains undisclosed, but the aim is clear: to significantly reduce alcohol and drug-related accidents on the road.
According to the social media post by the Stockton Police Department, checkpoints are placed in strategic areas based on past collision statistics and DUI arrests, in hopes of deterring potential impaired drivers. High Visibility Enforcement tactics, such as DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols are not only meant to catch offenders but also to send a clear message—driving under the influence is not tolerated.
A worrying trend noted by the department is an increase in drug-impaired driving cases, which are becoming as common as alcohol-related incidents. Studies cited by the department indicate that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had drugs in their system, with 14 percent of drivers testing positive for impairing substances as opposed to 7.3 percent for alcohol. With marijuana detected in 7.4 percent of drivers, it's slightly more prevalent than alcohol among impaired drivers. The department underscores the importance of being cautious with medication and alcohol consumption, as even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairing effects when combined with drugs.
Those caught driving under the influence can expect severe consequences, including jail time, hefty fines, DUI classes, and license suspensions. The financial burden of a DUI arrest can exceed $10,000, not to mention the personal embarrassment that comes with it. It's a high price to pay for a preventable mistake. The Stockton Police Department's efforts are bolstered by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, and through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which also encourages the public to actively report drunk drivers by calling 9-1-1.
