Clevelanders basking in the pleasantly warm embrace of high pressure yesterday might want to savor it while it lasts, as the area forecast points to some meteorological shake-ups ahead. According to a forecast discussion from the National Weather Service in Cleveland, high pressure will shift east today and Saturday, giving way to warmer temperatures and introducing the possibility for thunderstorms - both of which are standard fare for an Ohio summer.
While today will see highs in the mid-upper 80s with a side of comfortable humidity, don’t get too cozy, for Saturday is expected to turn up the heat even more - a few spots may touch around 90 degrees and thunderstorms developing to our west could gatecrash Northwest Ohio, bringing a 20 percent chance of precipitation mainly near the I-75 corridor.
As we roll into the weekend, the National Weather Service sheds light on the cause: an upper-level ridge will park over the central U.S., with a trough over Quebec nudging a cold front southeast - it's slated to grace the region Sunday into Sunday night, bringing a greater chance for showers and thunderstorms. Localized heavy rain and the potential for a few strong to severe storms, especially in the southwestern part of the area where conditions are ripest, loom on the horizon.
Come Monday, temperatures are expected to take a slight downward turn post-frontal passage - a bit of relief with highs still anticipated in the 80s, and conditions mostly dry save for some isolated rain. A weak low moving through Tuesday into Wednesday ushers in more rain and scattered thunderstorms, with temperatures continuing on a gradual cooling trend to the low 80s by midweek.
For those with an eye to the skies, or flights to catch, the aviation outlook from the National Weather Service Cleveland station suggests patchy morning fog giving way to clear skies today. However, with fog likely to re-emerge tonight and potentially drop visibility at southern terminals, travelers might face some delays. On Sunday, non-VFR conditions could prevail amidst thunderstorms, with a repeat possible come Tuesday.
Over on Lake Erie, mariners take note: the high pressure keeps things calm at first, but a cold front Sunday will see winds shift and pick up speed - potentially leading to conditions that might warrant a Small Craft Advisory come Monday, might need no advisories today.
