On a recent Saturday afternoon on the streets of Southeast D.C., a conversation escalated into violence, leading to the arrest of a suspect connected with a shooting. According to a report from the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident took place in the 2200 block of Minnesota Avenue at around 4:34 p.m. last Saturday, where one individual drew a gun, fired at the victim, and then fled by car.
Quickly following the event, and as a testament to their investigative persistence, MPD detectives identified a suspect. 21-year-old Corneal Smith of Southeast D.C. was arrested, charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), in the aftermath of the shooting which left the victim with non-life-threatening injuries and in need of hospital treatment, fortunately, the incident could have had a much darker ending had the circumstances been just slightly altered.
The investigation is ongoing, and MPD calls for the community's support to bring any additional perpetrators to justice. They urge anyone with information related to this case to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or to submit a tip via text to their TEXT TIP LINE at 50411, making sure to ensure the safety of all people involved and not to take any personal action that could potentially escalate the situation further or compromise the investigation.
Moreover, they highlight an incentive for cooperation: a reward of up to $10,000 is being offered to individuals providing information that leads to an arrest and conviction in connection with this or any other violent crime within the district, this initiative is a part of MPD's efforts to encourage community collaboration.
