Authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with a shooting that occurred earlier this week on Benning Road in Northeast Washington, D.C., leaving one individual injured.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), the incident took place at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6, in the 2000 block of Benning Road, NE. A verbal altercation escalated when the suspect allegedly produced a handgun and fired at the victim, causing non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene as bystanders were left in shock and distress. The victim was promptly transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Within 48 hours of the incident, police identified and arrested 31-year-old Brian Diggs of Southeast D.C. MPD reports that Diggs was taken into custody on Thursday, August 7, and faces multiple charges, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Carrying a Pistol Without a License, Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition. At the time of his arrest, Diggs was reportedly in possession of a firearm, which authorities have seized as evidence.

The MPD’s official statement emphasized that the arrest not only resolves this particular case but also underscores ongoing concerns over gun violence and the prevalence of illegal firearms in the District.
