An investigation into a violent carjacking turned deadly when an armed suspect was fatally shot by St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department officers. According to SLMPD's report, 53-year-old man was carjacked at gunpoint around 1:20 a.m. in the Hyde Park neighborhood, with his Ford Fusion later becoming the center of the police stakeout.
The incident unfolded quickly, with detectives surveilling the carjacked vehicle when multiple individuals arrived on the scene in a separate dark grey car. An armed male suspect fled on foot when police sought to approach, resulting in a chase. The officers reportedly attempted to repeatedly command the suspect to disarm before the fatal encounter took place in an alley at Salisbury & N. 20th Streets. The sequence of events was detailed by a statement from SLMPD.
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Carlos Jackson of St. Louis City, was struck by police gunfire following the foot pursuit. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to the scene and attempted to perform lifesaving measures, but Jackson was pronounced dead at the location. Officers recovered a firearm with an extended magazine and a conversion device next to Jackson, along with a key fob to the stolen Ford Fusion. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department noted that none of their officers were injured during the confrontation.
An inquiry into the officer-involved shooting is currently being conducted by the department's Force Investigation Unit. This comes in parallel to the ongoing investigation of the initial carjacking incident. Further information on both of these cases has not been released as the investigations are still actively proceeding, SLMPD has confirmed.
